I used to think that it would be amazing to be able to read 100 books a year… or even 50, or heck, even 20!!! I continued to put this on my goals list, but never reached it… I was admiring those gurus and successful people who do read that many books.
Then I got to thinking, what’s the point?
Great job… you read 100 books…. what did you learn? What have you implemented in your business?
If someone has the ability to speed read, or read 100 books/year… then I want to know what they got out of it….
But for me…. trying to read 100 books a year was killing me slowly…
I was beating myself up because I wasn’t as good as the gurus out there.
I was stressing out because I couldn’t read as fast as them.
I thought i was never going to be a millionaire/successful if I couldn’t read that many books.
I do believe in reading books, but recently I have shifted my perspective.
In my quest to try to read 100, 50, or even 20 books, I found myself reading through them really fast, many times my mind in another part of the planet, and t hen I look down and realize I have “read” over 10 pages and have no idea what happened. It’s as if I was reading it just to say I read it….
So now, I am choosing a different way to read books. If you still want to read 20/50/100 books a year- then go for it! I think it’s amazing.. it’s just not any type of pressure I want to put on myself.
I’m reading books in a more consistent manner, like 1 chapter/day, or 10 pages a day.. that way I have a chance to take in the chapter, and let it integrate into my life. Into my spirit. Into my cells. I find that I’m able to take more of the material in the book and place it into my life if I don’t have the pressure of “keeping up with the Joneses” and trying to zip through a list.
Heck, I may end up reading 20, 50 or even 100… but I’m doing it at my pace, where I KNOW I’m getting EVERYTHING I need from it 😀
Alriiighty… I hope that I inspired you to shift your perspective and think about life and things in a way you never thought of… What are your thoughts? Do you believe in reading a large list of books every year? Or not focusing on the number, but the quality of time? Do you believe in speed reading?
