How to be Bored
If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t handle boredom well. You may eat more because you have nothing to do, become a little more depressed, or want to do nothing but watch TV because it feels like you’re doing something.
Let’s talk about how to handle boredom. There’s a good chance that when you experience boredom, it’s because you lack passion in your life at that moment. If you feel bored often, it’s time to change up your life. Try new things and connect with new people. If you don’t get out and experience life, you may miss the experiences that may be there.
There are times, believe it or not, that boredom can be a good thing. You can use this as a time to slow down and reflect, or try something new. Rather than finding ways to kill time when you experience boredom, use it as a way to propel you into new things. Maybe you can use this time to map out future dreams and aspirations. Next time you’re bored, instead of going into auto-pilot and wasting your time, challenge yourself to do something worth while. This could be something as simple as letting your creativity flow by coloring, drawing, or creating something fun. Don’t be afraid to be bored.
This is a subject that’s near and dear to my heart because boredom and Jenny O don’t always mix. When I get bored or what I feel like is boredom, I emotionally eat. I’ll eat a lot of food because I’m bored and I have nothing to do. I have nothing stimulating me. When I’m bored, I will become a little more depressed. When I’m bored, I want to watch TV because I feel like I’m doing something.
Have you ever seen a post on how to be bored more effectively? When you feel those feelings of boredom come on, it’s likely because you don’t have any type of passion in your life associated with that moment, or you don’t have a passion that drives you enough in your life. You may have things that are fun but not activities that you get excited about, or that you look forward to putting into your schedule and life.
If you are feeling bored a lot then it’s time for you to change up your life. The best way to change up your life is to try new things. Activities like leaving the house, going to new events with new people (scary!!!! I know!!!) I know that going to a new event where you know nobody is scary. I mean even for someone as outgoing as me, there are times when it is intimidating. I don’t want to go and sit in the corner and not talk to anybody.
If you go out and you connect with people you can continue to go deep in life. Life is meant to be lived, deep and wide as Delatorro McNeal, my mentor, teaches. If you’re not willing to get out there and see where life takes you, who you might meet and opportunities that may be there, then you won’t have the chance to get out of that sense of boredom.
When being bored is good. Let me divert here for a second. I think that when you’re bored, you can use it as an opportunity to slow down and meditate or connect with nature, or maybe you try something that you’ve always wanted to do! Just like a kid! Color, draw a picture, create something artistic, or try something creative. Use the boredom to help fuel you and give yourself permission to do something that you may not otherwise do or try! For example, if I find myself really bored I’ll use that as a propelling strength to work on a vision board or a dream board. (A vision board or a dream board is a place where you can put pictures or words that depict what you want for your life and your future. It’s a visual way to map out what you want).
One day I was bored (or what I thought was bored) and I put together a fun drawing on the inside cover of a notebook I have.
I put this together one day when I was bored. It has turned into a really powerful tool for me. I used the inside cover to write words that fueled me and that fueled my passion. So all the words that make me feeling good, I wrote them down. Thriving, energy, growth, exciting, adventurous. So when I use that boredom to fuel me, this is what I created. This is actually a tool that I use very frequently to spark creativity.
Ever catch yourself feeling like, “oh my gosh, I have nothing to do.” Then, it’s time to participate in things that make you feel like a kid. It’s okay to not be corporate. It’s okay not to be super professional 24/7. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. Life is meant to be lived, enjoyed, experienced from every facet imaginable. Use the boredom to fuel you.
I believe that as a society we are afraid to bored, and without anything to do. What I mean is we spend so much time on our cell phone texting. How many times do you go to the store or restaurants and you just see people texting? By themselves, or even with company… head down, fingers moving. It feels like we’re afraid to be bored. We’re afraid to have nothing to do because oh my gosh, ‘what will people think of me if I’m not doing something?’
Have you thought that before? I know I have. It’s our instinct to pick up the phone and start texting somebody, or to start Facebooking somebody. It’s our instant reaction to down time. Just imagine if you were to put that phone away and you were to connect with somebody face to face or make a new friend. Just imagine if you called an old friend to connect, instead of picking up your phone to check Facebook to see what’s going on… to find out 30 minutes later you’re still scrolling your news feed and feeling depressed because all these people are having so much fun and you’re not because you’re home looking at Facebook on the couch.
Call a family member. Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time. Just imagine the feelings, fuel and passion that it would give you.
So, next time you’re bored and you go into “auto pilot” (grab your phone, watch tv, eat, drink, etc) try to stop yourself and challenge yourself to do something kid-like. To do something that will make you feel amazing and wonderful. To do something to fuel your creativity and your passion.
Write down things, be abnormal. Be outside the box. You don’t have to fit into what society tells you. Be you, whatever that means to you. Stop being bored. Use boredom as a tool to fuel you.
